The Mauritian government has held a press conference in Beijing to promote tourism. Statistics have showed a growth in the number of tourist arrivals from China. According to Mauritian officials, their tourism promotion that relies on emerging markets like China will pay well in the long term.

In recent years, Mauritius, the beautiful island country known as a fascinating, world-in-one-island slice of paradise, has attracted more and more Chinese tourists with its rich tourism resource. The island is loaded with natural sights, geographic variation and cultural diversity. Since the openning of the flight between Shanghai and Mauritius in 2011, the number of Chinese tourists in Mauritius has surpassed 16 thousand which is doubled comparing with 2010.

In recent years, Mauritius, the beautiful island country known as a fascinating, world-in-one-island slice of paradise, has attracted more and more Chinese tourists with its rich tourism resource.

Karl Mootoosamy, Director Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said, "We would like to make this progress continue and we think that the number of Chinese tourists will double again this year to bring a consequent number. We believe that China will be the most promising tourism market."

During the promotion, a lot of Mauritian luxury hotels and traval agencies negotiated with their Chinese counterparts. According to one hotel representative, two factors contributed in the Chinese tourists growth. From March of this year, the current weekly flight between Shanghai and Mauritius will no longer stopover in Kuala Lumpur and its capacity will be increased by over 100%. The closer cooperation between UnionPay and Mauritius Commercial Bank also boosted Chinese tourists’s interest in this island country.

Siddik Bodhee, Director of sales, Sofitel Imperial Mauritius, said, "In our hotel, Chinese clients occupied about 0.5% of all the clients in 2010. Well in 2011, the number has increased to 8% which is really remarkable."
