News from Mumbo Island Posted on: Friday, May 28, 2010

Mumbo IslandKayak Africa's Mumbo Island -  'paradise' isle in the Lake Malawi National Park -  has proved Malawi's most romantic location in recent weeks. It's remote and idyllic location makes it popular with honeymooners. One week recently saw 3 honeymoon couples and two proposals on the island. Actually, one proposal was made in a double kayak, and the ring (thankfully a temporary plastic one) was knocked into the lake! Now we know why Mumbo is heart-shaped!

For all guests, the latest addition to the island infrastructure is a thatch and wood Yoga and Pilates Deck, set in a private area of miombo woodland forest behind the camp. Here Renee Watson, a well known pilates master trainer from Cape Town who has moved to Cape Maclear, is going to run specialised pilates retreats for anyone interested. The first workshop began on 25 May.

On the personnel side, Tanya Leslie, Malawian born and bred, is the new Mumbo island manager and has settled in seamlessly. Island life suits he and she has already embarked on a project to get a full photographic record of Mumbo's bird list. Meanwhile, two memebrs of staff have completed the Emergency First Response (EFR) first aid course - the first Malawians to do so in Chembe village.

Even more news from Kayak Africa concerns some great initiatives to help support the local communities.  Genuine and heartfelt Responsible Tourism in action. Read more in the following Blog Entry.
