VentureCo Launches Malawi Book Bus. Fisherman's Rest HQ
Posted on: Wednesday, July 07, 2010
VentureCo is launching the Malawi Book Bus project that joins the original project at Victoria Falls, the Meheba UNHCR project in Zambia and the Ecuador project.
The Book Bus (www.thebookbus.org) is a mobile library service that carries eight volunteers at a time, plus two members of staff and is equipped with books, art materials and bags of enthusiasm! Book Bus visits a school and volunteers work with a year group to read a story and bring it to life through the media of painting & drawing, puppet-making and live performance. The idea is to create the link between the recited story and the written word, enhancing the children’s regular reading lessons and instilling a love of reading.
Volunteers commit for a minimum of two weeks so that there is consistency in the relationships formed between pupils and volunteers. Volunteers come from a range of backgrounds: some are fresh from school but most have considerable life experience, many coming from arts backgrounds such as teaching, literary roles and the caring professions. The full-time leader is there to ensure volunteers settle in to the project and that expectations on both sides are met.
Book Bus will be driving overland from Victoria Falls, Zambia to Fisherman’s Rest www.fishermansrest.net Blantyre, Malawi from 2nd October to 17th October 2010. Fisherman’s Rest is the Malawi HQ for the Book Bus. En route we will visit a primary school in South Luangwa National Park to work with the village school.
The 14 day safari includes some big game watching, exploring Lake Malawi and the vinspired Lake of Stars Festival, as well as some volunteer work.
