Ethiopia is a fascinating and unique country for its abundant birds. There are over 863 species of birds which about 16 species of birds are fully endemic to Ethiopia. The climate is warm and comfortable all year round and the bird life is exceptional. Both highland and rift valley lakes, rivers, forests, valleys, the sheer of cliffs harbour different species of birds. Eventhough there are numerous birds to be seen with the historical and cultural route, the bird itinerary is exceptional. It opens good opportunity of watching endemic birds, rare birds, and localized birds. Birds like Abyssinian cat bird and Black headed forest oriole are well known for beautiful calls. Abyssinian cat bird makes the most impressive calls. Its sound pitch is like a song.
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa. In the city and surroundings areas some species of birds
like Ruppel’s vulture,Hooded vultures, Thick billed raven (endemic), Brown rumped seed eaters, Grey headed Sparrows, Baglafecht’s weavers, Dusky flycatchers, Tekeze sunbird, wattled ibis, White collared pigeons (endemic), Red eyed dove, and African rock martins can be seen.
Day 2: City tour in Addis Ababa. Late afternoon drive west of Addis Ababa to Gefersa
Water reservoir to see wetland and bush species of birds like Black headed heron,
African spoonbill, African Black duck , Teal, pintail, booted eagle, Common snipe, Black
Headed siskin, Marsh sandpiper, Blue winged goose (endemic), wattled ibis (endemic), Black headed siskin (endemic), African citril, and many others.
Day 3: Drive from Addis Ababa to Awassa. Stop at Lake Hora in Debre Zeit, Awash
River and Koka Lake, Lake Zeway, Abijata-Shalla National Park (Abijata and
Shalla Lakes), Lake Langano and Lake Awassa. In all these places, you see birds
Like Spur-winged lapwing, Malachite kingfishers, African pygmy goose, Egyptian
Goose, Black billed barbet, Black winged lovebird, African darter, Black crowned
Crane , Lesser jacanas, Pygmy goose, Greate white pelicans, Greater and Lesser
Filamingoes at Lake Abijata, Blue breasted bee-eater, Senegal Thicknee, Black
Goshawk, Cattle eagrets, Hamerkop, Marabou stork,
Coot, Yellow wagtail, Black necked grebe, Green backed heron, Black heron,
Sacred ibis, White faced tree duck, Spur winged goose, Knob billed goose, Wigeon Garganey, African Pochard, Tufted duck, Black billed woodhoope, Black shouldered kite, Marsh harrier, Black crake, Little ringed plover, Three banded Plover,Black tailed godwit, Green wood hoope, Grey backed cameroptera,Yellow billed eremomela, Indigo, Violet backed starling, White bellied go away birds, White headed buffalo weavers, Blue napped mouse birds, Von der Decken’s hornbills, and many others.
Day 4: Explore birds mentioned at day 3 itinerary at hotel gardens, nearby forests, at fish
Market on the shore of Lake Awassa and then proceed to Wondo Genet for forest
Birds like Yellow fronted parrot (endemic), Black winged lovebird (endemic),
Double-toothed barbets, African firefinchs, White browed robin chats,
Abyssinian woodpecker (endemic), Olive pigeons, White cheeked turacco
(Endemic). You also enjoy with hot spring water.
Day 5: After early morning exploring more birds, drive to Bale Mountains National Park.
Stop at the head quarter for wild animals, some birds, and plants. Then proceed to
Goba for overnights. Bale Mountians National Park is the home of endemism. In
General all over Bale Mountains birds like Watled crane, Ruddy shell duck,
Mountain buzzard, Abyssinian cat bird (endemic), Black headed siskin (endemic),
Rouget’s rail (endemic), Thick billed raven (endemic), Spot breasted plover
(Endemic), Blue winged goose (endemic), White collared pigeon (endemic),
Abyssinian woodpecker (endemic), Abyssinian long claw (endemic), Yellow
Fronted parrot (endemic), White backed black tit (endemic), Montane francolin,
Chust napped francolin, Abyssinian ground thrush, Augur buzzard, Yellow billed
Waxbill, Broad-ringed white-eye, Lammergeier, Moorland francolins, Steppe
Eagles, Golden eagles, etc.
Day 6: Drive to Sof Umar Cave to explore birds like Bristle crowned starling, Superb
Starling, Salvadori’s serin (endemic), crested francolin, superb starling, Namaqua
Dove, Emerald starling, Black throated barbet, White bellied go away bird, Red billed Hornbills, Straw tailed whdah, Northern crombec, Emerald spotted wood dove. Cut throat, Spek’s weaver, Red cheeked Cordon bleu, Purple grenadier, and many other forest birds.
Day 7: Drive from Goba to Negelle Borena. Before you leave the Harenna Forest, explore
Birds like Mountain buzzard, Lemon dove, Tambourine dove, African emerald
Cuckoo and Narinia's Trogon. Then you come to Genele River where the most pretty
Endemic Prince Ruspol’s turacco is localized. Two overnights at Negelle.
Day 8: Drive to the place where the endemic Sidamo lark is is found. In this area birds
Black winged plover, Kori Bustard, Black bellied bustard. The surroundings areas
also support like Tawny eagle, Bateleur, African harrier hawk, Eastern chanting
goshawk, Abyssinian roller, Yellow billed hornbill, Abyssinian scimitarbill,
Northern white crowned bush shrike and slate coloured boubou.
Day 9: Drive to further South East Ethiopian to Yabello areas. The two endemic birds
Ethiopian bush crow and White tailed swallow are found in this area. Two
nights at Yabello town.
Day 10: Full day exploring in Yabello areas to see birds like Yellow-bellied Eremomela,
Gabar Goshawk, Pygmy falcon, White bellied canary, Yellow spotted petronia,
Lilac breasted rollers, Pygmy facon, Yellow necked spurfowl, Rufous crowned
Roller, Vulturine guineafowl.
Day 11: Drive to Lake Langano. Before you leave Borana areas, you visit birds like
White Winged widowbird, Blue breasted bee-eater, Bare eyed Thrush, and Bandid
Parisoma.
Day 12: In the morning you may explore for some birds through the forests around the
Lake like Southern pochard, African thrush, Red billed oxpecker, Grey wood
Pecker, Isabelline shrike, Bare faced go away bird, Little bee eater, Imperia eagles,
rested eagles, Grey black headed gull, Little rock thrush, Cape Teal, Abyssinian
ground hornbill and Hemprich’s hornbill. After exploration you head to Awash
National Park for two overnights.
Day 13: On this day you drive and walk through and around Awash National Park to
visit different species of birds and animals in addition to its marvelous water fall
and gorge. The hot spring area, Mt. Fentalle, Awash River and water fall,
Riverine forests, swampy areas, grassland, savannah in the park consist of many
Species of birds like Shining sunbird, White crowned Shrike, Eastern yellow
Billed hornbill, Scissor tailed kite, Yellow necked superfowl, Eastern chanting
Goshawk, White bellied go away bird, Red winged lark, Somali bee-eater, Purple
Grenadier, Steel blue whydah, Straw tailed whydah, Black throated barbet, Black
Billed woodhoopoe, Abyssinian scimitarbill, Egyptian vulture, Greater honey
Guide, Three banded courser, Yellow throated seedeater (endemic) and
Many others can be seen.
Day 14: Drive back to Addis Ababa. You may stop at Hora Lake at Debre Zeit to explore
More birds.
Day 15: Drive to Ankober for the rare endemic bird Ankober serin. In general in the area
You see birds like Thick billed raven (endemic), Black winged live bird
(Endemic), Watled ibis (endemic), Slender billed starling, White winged cliff
(Endemic), Moorland francolin, Erckel’s francoling, Nyanza swift, Baglafect
Weaver and many more others can be seen.
Day 16: Drive from Ankober to Addis Ababa.
Day 17: Drive from Addis Ababa to Jemma Gorge to see the localized enemic bird
