Accommodation in Selous Game Reserve

Camps and Lodges – Selous Game Reserve

Selous Safari Camp

The Selous Safari Camp, on the banks of the Rufiji River, is designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve. Each of the twelve safari tents is on its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush. The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique reverie and Lake Complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. There are no fences and no artificial modifications to the natural fauna and so animals wander freely through the camp.
Rufuji River Camp

Located on the banks of the Rufiji river, in a point where the ample and tranquil river is animated by many and different species of animals.

Twenty tents facing the sunset, with comfortable beds, walled en suite facilities, mosquito netting and all of the comfortable equipment of a lodge; each tent has a private veranda under a roof of local straw – makuti- that creates the perfect place for reading, writing or just resting in the shade. A structure in the central part of the camp hosts the restaurant, bar and library, all with a view of the river and the sunset. All of the camp structures, kitchen included, are being constantly renovated, attaining the highest level of comfort without sacrificing the emotion of a total immersion in a completely natural environment.

Electricity and hot water are powered by solar panels, while UHV-filtered drinking water is available throughout camp (including tents). A covered swimming pool is situated in the camp, between reception and the mess area.

Sand River Camp

Sand River Selous, the most luxurious lodge in the Selous game reserve, is situated in the Northern part on the banks of the Rufiji River. The lodge is situated under large Tamarind and Pod Mahogany trees, on a rocky peninsula overlooking a vast sweep of the Rufiji River.

Sand Rivers Selous Lodge's 8 grand open-fronted guest cottages are constructed from local wood and stone, each with large en-suite bathrooms and running hot and cold water. This safari lodge in Tanzania has an imposing mess and lounge area, and swimming pool set on the banks of the river, and the service and dining (both private and communal) is excellent.

The lodge has a congenial old-English colonial atmosphere with a team of experienced and friendly staff ready to welcome you, offering a unique experience in the middle of the bush!

Sand Rivers was started as a base-camp for walking safaris and continues to offer extended fly-camping expeditions and fishing safaris. The Hippos, Crocodiles, plains game and amazing birdlife of the Selous Game Reserve are often visible on the sandbanks right in front of the lodge.

Beho Beho Camp

Beho Beho was the first camp to be sited in The Selous, not on the banks, or the flood plains of the mighty Rufiji River, but in the cooler highlands so as to enjoy the 'cooling breezes' from which its name derives. Always designated as a 'private camp' it has fiercely protected its individuality and privileged location as one of the most 'magical' places it is possible to visit in safari Africa.

Beho Beho has created the true 'essence' of a safari refuge, for safari travellers who have 'been there and done that' throughout the big game countries of Africa now there is a camp that takes the 'best' of each safari and combines it into one remarkable experience. A luxurious base camp from which to explore on foot, by boat or by open safari cruiser the splendours of one of the largest game preserves in the world.

Beho Beho's stone built and palm thatched cottages, are not only a refuge from the equatorial sun, the bouncy seat of a game vehicle and the red dust of Africa nor are they j ust for sleeping, these spacious 'suites', which open up reveal unrivalled vistas of the Africa bush, are designed as private 'homes' with individuality and flair. The open sided lounges and dining areas together with the cocktail bar and 'billiards room' provide a sophisticated setting for post safari relaxation and the swimming pool and deck an ideal place to cool off.

There are just seven luxury tents set on high wooden decking with magnificent views of the river and of the forest beyond. They are beautifully furnished with colonial period furniture, which has the effect of transporting the guest into past eras of exploration and adventure. Each tent has a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom with porcelain basin and there is a double zipped entrance to keep out insects and roll down canvas on the windows.

There is a family Tent – which is really two separate tents on the same decking. Each has its own bathroom. The tents are spread over a large area, ensuring maximum privacy; each tent has its own veranda overlooking the Rufiji. Maasai askaris guide visitors to and from their tents at night, or if there are animals around.
